Abstract

Madrasah as a form of Islamic educational institution play an important role in fostering the spirit of nationalism and resistance to colonialism in Indonesia.. The establishment of madrasah in Indonesia represents a reform of traditional Islamic education systems such as pesantren, surau, and religious studies that were prevalent across the archipelago. This research aims to explore the reforms undertaken by madrasah in Islamic education during the Dutch and Japanese colonial periods in Indonesia. The study employs a literature review method with a qualitative and socio-historical approach. Through a socio-historical lens, the research seeks to present a factual description and critical analysis of the reforms implemented by madrasah. Based on data gathered from relevant journals and references, it can be concluded that during the 20th century colonial periods of Dutch and Japanese rule, madrasahs innovated Islamic education models by integrating modern educational management systems akin to those used in colonial government schools, while preserving their distinctive religious education characteristic of traditional pesantren model.
