KONSEP KEBEBASAN BERKEHENDAK DALAM PEMIKIRAN IMAM AL-MATURIDI DAN RELEVANSINYA BAGI PENDIDIKAN KARAKTER ISLAM

The purpose of this study is to examine Imam Al-Maturidi's understanding of freedom of choice and its application in modern Islamic character education. Responding to the debate between the Jabariyah and Qadariyah schools, Al-Maturidi, a prominent figure in Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah theology, developed a moderate perspective that balances divine will and human moral responsibility. This paper examines how Al-Maturidi's ideas on ikhtiyar and kasb offer a theological basis for developing responsible, morally conscious, and proactive characters. A descriptive-analytical literature study methodology was used in the qualitative research. Maturidi's theological journals and literature provided secondary data, while Al-Maturidi's key writings, such as Kitab al-Tawhid and Tawilat Ahl al-Sunnah, provided primary data. Data were collected through searching, reviewing, and documenting relevant citations from digital libraries. Key themes were coded, theological contexts interpreted, and practical implications synthesized as part of the content analysis. According to research findings, Al-Maturidi's theory of free will is relative, meaning that although humans can make conscious decisions, they remain under God's authority. By encouraging a dialogical, introspective, and participatory approach that fosters internal awareness while avoiding fatalism or extreme individualism, this idea is relevant for Islamic character education. Its implications include a school atmosphere that encourages responsible independence, evaluation based on the internalization of values, and the role of teachers as moral advisors. Overall, humanistic Islamic education that combines faith, reason, and action for a responsible generation is strengthened by Al-Maturidi's ideas.
